If we expect students to be independent we have to provide them with opportunities to make decisions about their own learning. As a way to personalize learning, teachers can help students learn to plan, prioritize and work independently during math and reading small group time by “ditching” the timer. This allows students to process and move at their own pace through activities while affording the teacher time to work with other students on their specific needs. • How do you currently hold students accountable for small group learning time?
• What concerns do you have about “ditching" the timer?
• What would be the benefits for students if you restructured your small group learning time?
